ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Working on rice paper and silk, He Xi reimagines motifs of traditional Chinese painting in a highly personal way. His art is both extremely dense and remarkably restrained. They express strength with delicacy and convey intensity with elegance.
The precision and exactitude of his strokes create doubt, ambiguity, and mystery. Silk, being more resilient and less absorbent than paper, offers a delicate support that requires precision and control. It also allows for the successive application of many layers, providing endless possibilities for subtle nuances.
The exhibition “When the Countryside Whitens”, organised by the ICICLE Cultural Space and curated by Myriam Kryger, features ten large and medium-format silk paintings created between 2021 and 2024. This period of global upheaval led He Xi to compose desolate landscapes imbued with a solemn atmosphere. Their symbolic depth, carrying a rich cultural heritage, remains open to interpretation, inviting each visitor to perceive their profound humanity.
