THE RED ENVELOPES TRADITION

The red envelopes legend comes from a story of demon name Sui who would terrorise children on New Year’s Eve. However, the villagers discovered that the demon was afraid of the colour red, loud noises and fire. To protect their children, the villagers started putting coins in red envelopes and hanging them on their doors.

Over time this evolved into the custom of giving red enveloppes, known as 紅包, hóngbāo) filled with money as a symbol of protection, good luck and prosperity.
