LUO MINGJUN | PARIS CULTURAL SPACE

ON THE WAY

EXHIBITION | 12 OCTOBER - 15 MARCH 2027

ICICLE Cultural Space Paris presents On the Way, the first solo exhibition in France by Chinese artist Luo Mingjun, curated by Myriam Kryger. A pioneering figure of the Chinese avant-garde of the 1980s and co-founder of the experimental Group O, Luo Mingjun has developed a practice shaped by artistic freedom, displacement and the refusal of fixed identities. Bringing together a selection of paintings, the exhibition explores the connections between memory, belonging and transformation.

Clouds, bowls, flowers, pins and solitary figures appear within compositions of remarkable restraint. Through successive layers, transparencies and erasures, Luo Mingjun creates images suspended between presence and disappearance, figuration and abstraction. Her paintings draw on personal experience without illustrating it directly, allowing familiar objects and gestures to carry meanings that extend beyond the individual.

Having left China for Switzerland in 1987, Luo Mingjun has continued to explore what it means to move between places, cultures and identities. From the monumental Mountains to Cross, Seas to Traverse to the No Return series, her works evoke a journey without a predetermined destination. In On the Way, painting becomes a space where memory, movement and freedom remain open to transformation.

“Presence and disappearance, memory and forgetting, displacement and freedom intersect in works that appear spare yet are complex in their construction, driven by the same necessity: to keep moving forward, without ever allowing the destination to precede the path.” Myriam Kryger, Exhibition Curator.

PARIS CULTURAL SPACE

ICICLE opened a cultural space in Paris in 2019, dedicated to creating opportunities for exchange and discovery. Guided by a belief in the importance of encounter, the cultural programme fosters dialogue and cross-fertilisation. On the 3rd floor of the ICICLE store at 35 avenue George V, the ICICLE Cultural Space hosts exhibitions devoted to art and design, and features a uniquely diverse bookshop. Its selection spans materials and images (architecture, painting, art, crafts), words and ideas (philosophy, poetry, literature, history, sinology), and practices and tastes (tea and Tao arts, martial arts and meditation techniques).
